200710-yogainthenightclub.jpg Cosmic. Ethereal. Melodic. Sensual. Energetic. These are among the sensations one experiences when listening to Yoga in the Nightclub, the debut CD by the up-and-coming and multi-talented artist Parvati. Described as a cross between Madonna, Laurie Anderson, Kylie Minogue and Goldfrapp, this album is a harmonious blend of pop radio, dance club beats, electronica and various sources of ancient wisdom from around the world. Parvati’s music brings together catchy melodies, positive lyrics, a beautiful singing voice, innovative beats and layers of sculptured sounds in a hip, refreshing manner—while driving home the message of love and peace.

Pop music with a conscience
Parvati was always sensitive to “otherness,” or the “immaterial,” and has always been conscious of the world’s beauty and its needs. Her concept for Yoga in the Nightclub began when she taught yoga at fitness centres and played music in clubs (in order to keep bread on the table). Seeking integration between the two, and seeing an increasing need for pop music with a conscious message, she began to explore the concept of yoga in everything she did. In so doing, she heard her voice over dance beats, and the inspiration behind Yoga in the Nightclub was born. Through her music, she clearly expresses her passion for life, reaching out to others, helping to shift and inspire lives, and encouraging listeners to live life fully and joyfully with her message of love and hope.

Parvati is more than just a singer and songwriter—she’s also the engineer and producer behind her own CD. She’s been called a renaissance woman by artists, technicians and businesspeople, and has gained international recognition by industry leaders. By performing with bands, composing and writing songs in her earlier years and making demos with her Mac and Audio Logic, she discovered that she herself was the producer she had been looking for.

“My head is so full of sounds, and the city is cacophonic,” she says. “Nature is the most amazing orchestra.” For Parvati, the world is sound, and through her evolving technical explorations—be it programming keyboards, playing piano or guitar, creating innovative beats or fiddling with dials and switches—she expresses what she feels inside.

A rare breed
Being a female producer is rare in the music industry, and people aren’t able to comprehend that she arranged the music, played the instruments and created the beats herself. “People don’t believe I have created the work,” she says, “They can get their head around me singing. They can get that I write songs.”

According to her, it is a general assumption that women don’t normally engineer and producer their own work. “Then again, the word ‘producer’ can mean various things these days,” she says, referring to other female producers and how much they are involved in production and receiving credit for their contributions. However, she has one piece of advice for any woman who wishes to become a music producer: “DO IT. And don’t believe anyone who says you can’t.”

If you’re into dance, electronica, ambient and inspirational music, then you’ll truly enjoy Yoga in the Nightclub. Listening to it, you can’t help but feel like you’re travelling through space, or relaxing and drinking in what nature has to offer, or even feeling energized and motivated to take on anything. Parvati’s music stands out from a lot of mainstream pop and dance not just because it was recorded and produced by a female artist, but also because it delivers a message that women can internalize.
