What is the nature of your business?
I write. A lot.

Okay, okay. The main purpose of my business is to put words and people together in such a way that it all makes sense. Whether I’m developing a tagline for a company or putting together a brochure, I enjoy creating effective copy that speaks to my customers’ customers.
 
What services or products does your business offer?

Who is your target market?
People who need words. 

What first sparked your interest in this business and why are you passionate about it now?
I’ve always longed to write. Even while I was working as a project manager in a previous lifetime, I would work on copywriting and magazine articles on breaks and lunch hours because I enjoyed doing it so much. When I started working as a full-time writer for one company only, I felt trapped as I could only write about certain products all the time.

By having my own business, I am able to work on writing projects for various clients and products that have different purposes. That’s what keeps things fresh and exciting for me, because there’s always something new to discover and share out there.

Who inspired you?
I grew up reading Erma Bombeck; her ability to turn her experiences into tales that made me laugh out loud enabled me to dream about doing something like that “when I was older,” like 22.

My husband is my greatest supporter and I was motivated to follow this path by the other women who have stepped out of the cubicle hell to go after what they want and deserve. I find inspiration in so many people, it’s impossible to only name a few.

Why did you pursue your own business vs. working for someone else?
Because I can set my own pace and determine my own measurements of success. That kind of freedom you can’t find working for someone else.

What are some of the obstacles you've faced and how did you overcome them?
It took me a while to figure out how to juggle the present with the future. If I spent too much time on current projects, I discovered that I’d have nothing to do (and no invoices to send out) for the following month.

One thing I still struggle with is not working 24/7, because I love what I do so much. The best thing for happiness at work is to enjoy time away from it. That way your butt doesn’t get permanently stuck to your desk chair.

What is your business's proudest achievement so far?
Repeat business and referrals. I wouldn’t be in business today if it wasn’t for the clients who supported me when I first took the plunge and started working for myself. Most of them are still on my client roster today.

What are some of your future goals?
This has nothing to do with writing for my clients, but I would love to get my book published and then have Oprah select it for her book club. In the meantime, I would love to help more people find the words they need to have their business succeed.

What 'Pearl of Wisdom' can you offer to help other women starting out?
Ask. If they say no, you won’t lose anything and you’ll be one more “no” closer to “yes.” But if you don’t ask at all, you’ll be stuck.
