In 1982 Marina Nemat was sixteen, and was arrested on false charges by Iranian Revolutionary Guards and tortured in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison.
What happened to her seems a world away and in many ways it was. At a time when most teenaged girls are choosing their prom dresses, Nemat was listening to gunshots as her teenage friends were being executed. She only escaped this fate because one of the guards married her.
When she is released from prison she is reunited with the man who waited for her. They marry and emigrate to Canada in 1991. She has since written the best selling book – Prisoner of Tehran – A Memoir in which she shares her story of courage, and a love that endured.
