On August 27, 1900, a fierce tropical storm was detected over the Atlantic. It continued its journey north-east into the southern U.S., intensifying in speed and strong winds along the way. By the time it reached Galveston, Texas on September 8, it was a category 4 hurricane, with tides 8 to 15 feet in height. When it was all over, the storm caused over 8,000 deaths and resulted in $30 million dollars in damage. The hurricane is considered to be the most destructive hurricane in U.S. history. But it had no name.

I got pretty excited when I first read about the women’s movement, back when I was in Grade Six. I clearly remember sharing the news with my girl friends. There I stood—a prepubescent prophet—proclaiming the coming of a new era in which women would shake off the bonds of patriarchy (okay, okay, I didn’t use the word “patriarchy” in Grade Six) and step forward to lead the world into a new epoch of peace, freedom and justice for all.
